Frequently asked questions
General
What is a data warehouse?
A data warehouse is a large database kept for reporting. It holds the history of an organisation’s activity, such as every sale, every product and every branch, arranged so that it can be analysed.
What does DataWeaver do?
DataWeaver lets people get answers from a data warehouse without writing code. They choose what they want from lists, run the report, and receive a table of results. DataWeaver writes the query.
Do users need to know SQL?
No. SQL is the language a data warehouse understands, and DataWeaver writes it for them. Anyone who wishes to can display the SQL behind a report.
Who is DataWeaver for?
Managers and analysts who need figures from the warehouse, and the report administrators who decide what those users are offered.
Running reports
What is the difference between Group and Break?
Group shows a line as a column in the results, with a row for each value. Break does the same and adds a subtotal each time the value changes.
Can results be taken into Excel?
Yes. Export CSV downloads the results as a file that Excel opens.
Can reports be run on a phone?
Yes. Run Report works in a browser and rearranges itself to fit a narrow screen.
Why are some totals left blank?
Not every figure can be added up. A percentage, or a count of distinct items, would give a misleading total, so DataWeaver leaves those blank.
Administration
Who decides what a report offers?
A report administrator, using Report Admin. They define the lines, headings, measures, options and rules that users see.
How does DataWeaver prevent very large queries?
An administrator can add a rule that a report must be narrowed down, for example to a year or a date range, before it will run. Results are also limited to the first 10,000 rows, with a message asking for further criteria.
What happens when the warehouse changes?
The model is updated in the ERD Designer and Report Admin picks up the change. If a table is removed and put back, the settings that depended on it are re-linked automatically.
Deployment and security
Where is DataWeaver installed?
On your own servers, within your own infrastructure.
Can DataWeaver change our data?
No. DataWeaver only reads the warehouse.
